Sept. 29 Buckles Lake loop fall colors hike. Strenuous off trail hiking, approx. six mi. and 1500’ elevation change. Leave from Fair Grounds parking area at 8:30 a.m. Call Susan Dussell at 264-3823 for info.

Sept. 29 Trails maintenance near Devil’s Mountain. Bring lunch, hat, work gloves, sturdy shoes/boots, sunscreen, and water. Tools furnished. Moderate to strenuous, (at your own pace). Meet in front of Alco to carpool at 8:00 a.m. Call John Applegate for info at 731-9325.


Oct. 4 Our monthly meeting at the Community Center on Hot Springs Blvd. at 6:30 p.m. Kim Means give a short overview on wilderness orientation with a GPS instrument.

Oct. 7 Soaring at Tall Timbers. Meet at 7:30 a.m. in City Market parking area. Must be at Rockwood Train Station by 9:10 a.m. for the 9:25 train. Depart from Tall Timbers @ 3:40 p.m. and return to Rockwood @ 4:20 p.m. Price is $269 per person, which includes train ticket, 4+ hours soaring, three course lunch served on elevated deck near river and soaring up to 540 feet over Animas River. Wear long pants, shirt and medium to heavy weight shoes. Must send check ASAP to “Soaring”, #1 Silverton Star, Durango, CO 81301, (mark check & accompanying note with SJOC.) Oct. 8 Easy hike to see fall colors at Opal Lake area. Meet at Junction Restaurant parking lot at 9 a.m. Call Greg Howard for info at 731- 0733.

Oct. 19-20 SJOC Sports Swap. If you have some sports gear to sell, this is the place to go to. People are needed to help log-in merchants, indi vidu als, setup room, bring baked goods for bake sale, etc. Clean-up crew is needed afterwards. Preparations start at 4:30 p.m. on the 19th, and 7:30 a.m. on 20th at the County extension building at the Fairgrounds. Call Jim/Nancy Cole at 731-2073.

Oct 23—26 Three days of hiking starting on 23rd inside Zion National Park. Most hikes rated strenuous, options for Virgin River hike, repelling etc. Moderate hikers can choose to do river trail, weeping rock, etc. on their own. Over night accommodation options are in Canyon RV Park (Quality Inn), Springdale, Utah. Call David/Shirley Hunter at 731- 1491 for info.
