Every day, many of us find our lives have become faster paced with increased
responsibilities and greater expectations. Yet, we face these growing
challenges with the same degree of adaptive abilities as we did years ago.
Our lives operate at the speed of Pentium processors and we're trying to run
them with only 486K internal systems. As our systems begin to show the signs
of distress we develop symptoms such as pain, sickness, stress and fatigue.
And, as these continue to grow, they affect the quality of our lives. So, we
attempt to regain order by seeking out cures and remedies to provide relief.
However, we often see these same symptoms return. Leaving the question, "Is
this all there is?" This is the same question that Dr. Lauren Cohen, DC
began to ask herself, and the answer led he to a form of health and wellness
called Network Spinal Analysis.
Dr. Cohen explained that Network Spinal Analysis is a form of Chiropractic
care but not like any form of traditional Chiropractic you may have seen.
Developed by Dr. Donald Epstein more than twenty five years ago, Network is
based on the concept of spinal and neural integrity. According to Dr. Cohen,
all of our experiences throughout life-physical, chemical and emotional-are
communicated through the nervous system. As Dr. Cohen explained, "When the
nervous system is unable to process these experiences effectively, the
system responds by creating distortions in the spinal column that act to
dampen the communication, much like and electrical system in a house. If you
overload a circuit, the breaker shuts off as a fail-safe in the system. If
that did not occur, there would likely be an electrical fire. If the nervous
system is unable to process the information, the distortions remain,
eventually leading to symptoms, breakdown and reduced ability to manage
stress.
An analogy Dr. Cohen gave is that the nervous system is like a finely tuned
stringed instrument. A guitar with a brand new string can play a full range
of tones and notes. If you place a piece of chewing gum along the neck of
the guitar, then the range of notes that the string can express becomes
limited. It still works, but not to its full potential. Dr. Cohen said the
distortions created along you spine are like "chewing gum" to the nervous
system, limiting its ability to communicate effectively. Dr. Cohen said, "If
your body can learn to identify, connect and release this interference, it
becomes more self-corrective and you will begin to expand the range you have
to express health and experience your life."
The actual methods used in Network are somewhat different from traditional
Chiropractic approaches. Manual adjustments are used, but they are in the
form of gentle touches to the spine, which Dr. Cohen said makes it ideal for
all ages and health conditions. "People often ask how such a gentle force
can accomplish a greater result," she said. "If I walk up to a door, I can
bang on that door to have someone let me in. Or, I can ring the doorbell.
When you know where to touch to access the system, it doesn't take much
effort to elicit a much greater response."
According to Dr. Cohen, our current cultural belief leads us to believe that
if we no longer feel our symptoms, then we have returned to health. Is this
true? If the oil light goes on in your car, and you simply place a piece of
black tape over the light, has the problem gone away? "Our symptoms are a
means through which our bodies are able to communicate an internal state of
distress, much like the oil light communicating that there is a problem in
the car," she said. "If we simply remove our symptoms we are limiting our
body's ability to respond. If your brain cannot feel it, it cannot find it,
and if it cannot find it, it cannot fix it. This does not mean that you
should continue to suffer with your symptoms. It does mean however, that as
your nervous system becomes more sensitive to its internal state, your body
will be able to identify and respond to these issues more quickly and more
effectively.
Dr. Cohen used a Network client as an example. "As Jim shares his experience
following a car accident and two decades of back pain, he explained, "it's
not just being free from pain, it's that I actually feel good, and I'm
getting more and more a sense of well-being throughout my body, not just
symptomatic in my back."
Although Network teaches your body to enhance its ability to heal itself,
Dr. Cohen said the strategy to do it is already within us; we just need to
rediscover it. "As infants we are born with an innate strategy for
dissipating tension," she said. "For example, when a small child is
distressed it will throw a temper tantrum, then as the tension is released
the child goes about her business. As we grow up, we learn it's not
acceptable to do this, so instead we store the tension. Network develops
that innate strategy so that you can release past tension patterns and
process future tensions in a healthy way," she added. "Without even
realizing it, your body has learned not to store the tension associated with
these events, freeing that energy to be utilized in more productive ways."
Dr. Cohen said Network can be very empowering. As the study by Dr. Robert
Blanks of the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology, College of Medicine at
the University of California, Irvine, demonstrated, "there was not a
"ceiling" to the results reported by patients under Network care." Dr. Cohen
explained, "As your body is able to access more of its innate potential,
more potential becomes possible. This study not only demonstrated a greater
expression of physical health, but improved mental/emotional states,
response to stress, and overall life enjoyment."
Dr. Cohen made the comparison between an investment and an expense. "An
expense is something that is short-lived, whereas an investment has a
long-term benefit," she said. "You will develop tools and strategies that
you will be able to utilize during your care as well as in your daily life,
and once developed, these tools and strategies are yours for a lifetime.
Therefore, Network is truly an investment in your health,"
