Local Dentist Wins 1000s at the Drop of a Ball PDF   E-mail
Saturday June 30th the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club held their 1st Rotary Golf Ball Drop at 1:30pm. The Golf Ball Drop was held concurrently with the Rotary Chuck Dorman Memorial Golf Tournament at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club.

So, what is a Golf Ball Drop?

A Golf Ball Drop is a raffle where golf balls, not tickets, are purchased. The winner is chosen by dropping the balls from a net raised high in the air by a crane. Whichever ball goes in the hole is the winner. If no balls are lucky enough to land in the hole, the winner is determined by which landed closest to the hole.

Planning for this fund raising event started in January. However, serious plans could not be made until a permit was applied for and received from the Secretary of State's office. This permit was received mid-April. From that time, the Rotarians of Pagosa started seriously planning this unique raffle.

The fund raiser was held by the Rotary Club for the general fund raising account. The proceeds of this event will benefit the following local and foreign Rotary projects:
3rd Grade Dictionary Project, 4th of July Parade, 9Health Fair, African Student Scholarship, Archuleta County Education Center, Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, Coat Drive, Exchange Students, Friendship Bridge, GED Tutoring, Group Study Exchange Team, Habitat for Humanity,
Jail Tutoring, Kids Voting, Mid-Act Junior Rotary Club, Operation Helping Hand, Pagosa Outreach Connection, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Scholarships, School Supply Drive, ShelterBox USA, Soup for the Soul, Sports Complex, Teacher Mini Grants as is earmarked for by the current year's budget which is approved by the Pagosa Rotary Board.

Balls were sold until 1pm on Saturday. Each ball purchased was carefully noted and a unique number was placed on the ball and put into the net for the drop. Over 38,000 worth of golf balls were sold for the Golf Ball Drop. 25% of the proceeds go to the winner of the event.

As time for the drop approached, a huge crane drove up and the net of purchased balls was attached. Slowly, the crane lifted the net high into the air. At 1:45 the net was open sending a cascade of multicolored balls onto the green. Since none of the balls landed in the designated hole, measurements had to be carefully taken.

The ball which landed closest to the hole was purchased by Dr. Gerlinde Ehni of Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

Below are pictures of the drop as it happened.
