Being new to town I was really unsure what to write my first editorial about. I have heard of several issues facing our community – the County budget crisis, the youth’s need for a safe place to hang, the drug problem prevalent here as it is in many places – but I truly do not have enough of the facts yet to give an honest opinion on these or any of the other issues Pagosa faces. So, I decided to write about one of the residents of Pagosa Springs. A very special lady, now forty years old, who has filled my life with love, courage and lessons.

Patricia’s physical problems were huge. Missing ligaments connecting her legs to her pelvic area were supposed to keep her from sitting up or walking. Two holes in her heart were supposed to reduce her life expectancy to her late teens early twenties at most, even after two open heart surgeries. Then there is the fact that she was born a Down’s syndrome child.
